Gabe Grunewald, addio all'atleta-eroina: correva con il cancro, è morta a 33 anni

Lutto nel mondo dell'atletica. È morta la mezzofondista statunitense Gabe Grunewald, da tempo malata di cancro e diventata un simbolo per la forza di volontà ed il carattere con cui ha affrontato il male che l'aveva colpita nel 2009. A dare notizia della scomparsa della statunitense classe '86 il marito Justin con un commovente messaggio. "Se n'è andata la mia migliore amica, ispirazione, eroina". Nei giorni scorsi era stato lo stesso Justin sui social a invitare fans e amici a inviare messaggi per salutarla. La personale battaglia contro il cancro per Grunewald era iniziata nel 2009 quando venne colpita da un carcinoma adenoideo-cistico. Dopo le cure e una operazione nel 2010 arrivò seconda nei 1.500 metri ai campionato universitari. Un nuovo tumore diagnosticato, questa volta alla tiroide, non le impedì di proseguire la sua carriera disputando i Trials olimpici 2012 nei 1500 metri correndo l'anno successivo il personale in 4'01''48. Nel 2014 vinse il titolo nazionale sui 3000 indoor. Gabe ha continuato a correre fino al 2016 quando le è stato asportato un tumore al fegato, l'anno successivo una recrudescenza del carcinoma tiroideo. Nel 2017 l'ultima apparizione in gara, ai campionati nazionali all'aperto di Sacramento nonostante fosse sotto cure chemioterapiche. I wish I didn't have to show it in this way because there's so many people I'd love to meet and catch up with tomorrow (including my grandma who I don't see very often ❤️). . But I'm gonna be brave and fight these fevers and hopefully the procedure will help me out big time. Prayers very much welcome. .
